The Toong Forest Trail: A Gentle Walk to Kawa Kawa Falls

Some hikes build toward a destination.

Others make the journey just as enjoyable as the place you’re trying to reach.

The Toong Forest Trail feels like the latter. Starting in Toong, the route winds through farmland, open hillsides, and a small mountain community before descending toward Kawa Kawa Falls. The waterfall provides a satisfying finish, but the changing scenery along the way is what gives the hike its character.

The trail begins with a series of gradual climbs through the countryside.

The elevation gain is spread across rolling farmland rather than one long ascent, making the hike feel steady and approachable. Navigation is straightforward throughout, allowing you to focus more on the landscape than on finding the correct path.

Around halfway through the hike, the trail reaches a small mountain community.

After climbing a steeper section to get there, it offers a natural place to catch your breath before continuing deeper into the route. Encounters with local residents remind you that these are working countryside trails rather than hiking paths built specifically for visitors.

From there, the trail gradually changes direction.

The rolling climbs give way to a longer descent toward Kawa Kawa Falls. While the route remains non-technical, some of the steeper downhill sections can be a little harder on the knees, especially on dry, uneven ground. Most of the trail is also fairly exposed, so the sunny weather adds a little more effort than the distance alone might suggest.

Eventually, the trail arrives at Kawa Kawa Falls.

Reaching the waterfall feels like a fitting conclusion to the hike after several kilometers of walking through open countryside. Rather than rushing straight to the destination, the route lets the landscape unfold gradually, making the waterfall feel like a reward for the journey rather than the only reason to hike.

Although this GPX recording ends at the falls, the hike itself doesn’t.

The return follows a different route, with part of the journey involving a long climb along a concrete road. It’s a reminder that even relatively easy hikes can have one last challenge before the day is over.

Overall, the Toong Forest Trail is one I would happily recommend to beginners looking for something a little more varied than a simple out-and-back walk. The navigation is easy, the terrain remains approachable, and the combination of farmland, mountain communities, and a waterfall keeps the experience interesting from beginning to end.

Sometimes the best hikes aren’t defined by a single destination. They’re defined by everything you pass along the way.
