The Radar Trail: A Relaxed Ridge Walk from Sudlon 1 to Bagakay

Some hikes are memorable because they push your limits. Others are memorable simply because they let you enjoy the walk.

The Radar Trail falls firmly into the second category.

Starting from Sudlon 1, the route follows a mostly downhill mountain ridge toward Bagakay, Toledo. It’s a relatively short hike that passes through farms, small mountain communities, and open countryside before finishing beside the river that flows into Malubog Lake. There are no major climbs to conquer or difficult obstacles to overcome. Instead, the trail encourages a steady, unhurried pace.

The first part of the hike remains pleasantly shaded as the trail winds through narrow paths and farmland. Navigation is generally straightforward thanks to the well-trodden trail, which is used regularly by both locals and livestock. Even so, there are a few side trails along the way, and in some places the path becomes less obvious where it passes through farmland. Having a GPX track available makes these sections much easier to navigate.

As the descent continues, the landscape gradually begins to open up.

Wide views of the surrounding countryside replace the earlier shaded sections, giving the hike a different feel without dramatically changing the terrain. The trail itself remains uncomplicated, although several rocky and uneven sections require paying attention to your footing. Because the route is steadily downhill, the constant descent can become surprisingly tiring on the knees despite the relatively easy difficulty. A trekking pole is a worthwhile addition if you have one.

One thing that stood out during the hike was how quiet the route felt.

Unlike some of the more popular trails around Cebu, I didn’t encounter other hikers along the way. The only signs of activity came from the small mountain communities scattered throughout the route. It gave the hike a calm, relaxed atmosphere that suited the gentle nature of the trail itself.

Eventually the trail reaches its endpoint at a bridge crossing the river that feeds into Malubog Lake.

By this stage, the terrain has become more exposed to the sun compared to the shaded beginning of the hike, making the final stretch feel noticeably warmer on a sunny morning. Fortunately, the overall distance is short enough that carrying around a liter of water is generally sufficient under normal conditions.

Although the Radar Trail is rated Easy, it still rewards paying attention to navigation. Several side trails branch away from the main route, and farmland occasionally overlaps sections of the trail, making it possible to wander onto a different path without realizing it. None of this makes the hike particularly difficult, but it’s a good reminder that even beginner-friendly trails benefit from a little preparation.

Overall, the Radar Trail is an easy hike that I would comfortably recommend to beginners looking for a quiet mountain walk. The navigation is mostly straightforward, the descent keeps the physical effort manageable, and the changing scenery provides enough variety to keep the journey interesting from start to finish.

Sometimes a hike doesn’t need dramatic scenery or difficult climbs to be enjoyable. Sometimes a quiet walk through the countryside is more than enough.
