Waterfall hikes often become little more than a race to the destination. People arrive, take a few photos, cool off in the water, and head back the way they came.
This loop felt different.
Rather than taking the direct two-kilometer route to the falls, I followed the longer loop that circles through the surrounding hills before descending to the river. It added more distance to the hike, but it also made the journey feel like more than just a walk to a waterfall.
The first half of the hike was surprisingly relaxed. Navigation was straightforward, the trail was easy to follow, and I regularly encountered other hikers along the way. Compared to many of the quieter routes I usually explore, this one felt much more social. Even though I was hiking alone, I rarely felt alone.
The trail itself isn’t particularly technical, but there are plenty of rocky and uneven sections that require paying attention to your footing. Most hikers with reasonable fitness shouldn’t have much trouble, although the terrain is enough to remind you that this is still a mountain trail rather than a simple walk.
Eventually the trail drops down toward Danasan Falls.
The waterfalls are undoubtedly the highlight of the hike, and it’s easy to understand why they’ve become one of Danao City’s most popular outdoor destinations. By the time I arrived, there were already plenty of people enjoying the water, creating a completely different atmosphere from the quieter countryside trails I often visit.
After spending some time at the falls, the real work began.
The return follows a sustained uphill climb back to the trailhead. It’s not especially long, but after already completing most of the loop, the climb feels noticeably more demanding than the earlier sections. Fortunately, much of the route remains shaded, making the ascent more comfortable despite the sunny weather during my hike.
If you’re only interested in reaching the waterfalls, the shorter direct route makes perfect sense. It’s quicker and gets you there with much less walking. But if you have the time and don’t mind a little extra effort, I think the full loop offers the better overall experience. It turns a simple waterfall visit into a more complete hike.
Overall, the Danasan Falls Trail Loop is a hike I would happily recommend to beginners looking for something beyond a short nature walk. The navigation is straightforward, the scenery changes throughout the route, and the physical challenge feels approachable without being trivial.
Sometimes taking the longer way really is the better choice.
