Mt. Kalatkat: A Gentle Climb with Views That Keep Getting Better

Not every mountain needs to be difficult to be rewarding.

Mt. Kalatkat is proof of that.

Located in Sibonga, the hike is short, easy to follow, and well suited to beginners, but it still offers the kind of wide mountain views that make you feel much farther from the city than you actually are. Rather than testing your endurance, the trail simply invites you to enjoy the climb.

For this hike, I started near Kalangyawon Elementary School instead of riding a motorcycle to the foot of the mountain.

It added a little extra distance, but it also made the hike feel more complete. The gradual walk served as a warm-up before the trail began climbing through grassy hillsides and narrow livestock paths.

The ascent is steady without ever becoming particularly steep.

The trail is well-trodden since local residents regularly use it to move livestock, making navigation straightforward throughout the hike. Even as the path narrows in places, it’s generally easy to see where you’re supposed to go, allowing you to spend more time appreciating the scenery than worrying about the route.

As the climb continues, the views gradually begin to open up.

The higher you go, the more the surrounding countryside comes into view. Most of the route is exposed, especially near the summit, so there isn’t much shade once you leave the lower sections behind. On a sunny morning, the heat becomes part of the experience, making regular water breaks well worth taking despite the relatively short distance.

What I enjoyed most about Mt. Kalatkat was its simplicity.

There are no difficult obstacles, no technical terrain, and no long, exhausting climbs. It’s simply a pleasant mountain walk that rewards a little effort with open views and a peaceful atmosphere. During my hike, I encountered very few people, which made it easy to enjoy the quiet surroundings.

The return follows the same trail back down to the starting point.

Like most out-and-back hikes, the descent is quicker than the climb, and before long you’re back where the day began. Despite its short distance, it still feels like a complete mountain experience rather than just a quick walk.

Overall, Mt. Kalatkat is a hike I would happily recommend to first-time hikers or anyone looking for an easy morning on the trail. The navigation is simple, the climb is approachable, and the scenery offers plenty of reward without demanding too much in return.

Sometimes the best beginner hikes aren’t the ones with the biggest summits. They’re the ones that remind you how enjoyable a simple walk through the mountains can be.
